Before the formation of Toto the group, its members performed sessions for Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher. [5] Guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's lead singer.
About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name around the globe.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name an alternative producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In 2008, a series of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a period of time. The group returned to the road in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return form for the group and the tour was accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
